Shoulder Motion & Strength

Thank you for your interest in this study on shoulder motion and strength.  The objective of this project is to understand how physical therapy affects shoulder motion and strength in patients with a rotator cuff tear, and for comparison we need to learn about shoulder motion and strength in people like you with healthy shoulders.


In this project, researchers will measure the motion and strength of your dominant shoulder.  If you choose to participate in this study, you will make one visit to the Motion Analysis Laboratory at the Henry Ford Hospital main campus in Detroit for an analysis of shoulder motion and strength.  You will perform two simple shoulder motions while the study directors collect data using a state-of-the-art x-ray imaging system. You will also have a CT exam of your shoulders (it gives us an accurate picture of the shape of your shoulder bones) and an ultrasound exam of your shoulder to assess the “health” of your shoulder muscles and tendons.  The images below are a quick overview of how we measure shoulder motion in our laboratory.

To participate in this study, you must meet the following criteria:

If you participate in the study, we do not expect there to be any costs to you beyond your routine medical care.  To cover your expenses (transportation, parking, etc), you will be paid $75.  


Thank you for your consideration of this important endeavor.  We expect that the information learned in this study will lead to improved treatments for patients with rotator cuff tears in the future.
