Ultrasound Imaging of Rotator Cuff and Shoulder Function

The purpose of this project is to evaluate how well a new state-of-the-art ultrasound imaging technology can predict a patient’s shoulder function after rotator cuff surgery.  The reason we've asked you to consider participating in this study is because: 1) you have a rotator cuff tear that requires surgery, or 2) you have normal shoulder function and are participating in the study as a healthy control subject.  


In this project, researchers will use an advanced ultrasound imaging system to acquire information about the quality of your rotator cuff muscles and tendons.  We believe that collecting this information before a patient has surgery will: 1) help the surgeon know how best to repair the rotator cuff tear, 2) guide a physical therapist as to when and how to begin rehabilitation exercises after surgery, and 3) predict how well a patient’s shoulder function (strength and motion) is restored after surgery.  We expect that the information learned in this project will lead to better treatments in the future for patients with a rotator cuff tear.

If you choose to participate in this study, you will make up to 3 visits to the Henry Ford Hospital Motion Analysis Laboratory, which is located in Midtown Detroit at the Integrative Biosciences Center (6135 Woodward Ave).  Each visit will take approximately 60 minutes, and you will be paid $25 for each visit. Any information we learn about your shoulder will be available to you during these visits to the Motion Analysis Laboratory.
